Understanding the needs of diverse communities including health and well being
What does it involve?
Enhancing understanding to eliminate prejudices and treat people fairly
Engaging participants through the power of lived experiences
Encouraging open dialogue, exploring demographics, barriers, and how beliefs, values and attitudes drive behaviour
Focusing on health inequalities
Ultimately, cultural awareness training is key to improving staff performance, service delivery, co-production and business resilience. Training delivered in person and is interactive.
Module 2 – Lived Experiences - Life of a Refugee
Lived Experience Training focuses on the importance of understanding and valuing personal experiences as a source of knowledge and insight, particularly in shaping identity and addressing social issues.
The training begins by defining lived experience and exploring its role in providing unique perspectives that differ from academic or theoretical knowledge. Participants learn to engage with and listen empathetically to others' stories, recognising the impact of factors like race, gender, socioeconomic status on individual experiences and barriers that are encountered through significant events.
Through workshops, interactive and reflective discussions, the training encourages participants to incorporate lived experiences into decision-making, advocacy, and community work, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and empathetic approach to addressing challenges and driving meaningful change.
This session is an account of Shamim’s story who was a child refugee and came to the UK with her family when Idi Amin expelled over 60,000 Asians from Uganda in 1972. She was born in Uganda, grew up in Birmingham and moved to York in 1986.
Discover her refugee story and how this community rebuilt their lives in York and other areas in the UK through an emotive, engaging and award-winning Rebuilding Lives Uganda50 York touring exhibition. Enhance your understanding, gain an insight into her perspectives, challenges and triumphs. Training delivered in person, is interactive and includes an award winning exhibition and workshops.
Module 3 - Lived Experiences - Living with Discrimination. Offering an insight into what is feels to live with discrimination. Training delivered in person or online.
Module 4 - Customs and Traditions of Asian groups - Delve deeper and find out more about groups from different backgrounds including core aspects of customs and tradition, mental health and attitudes towards death. Training delivered in person and is interactive.
